Colorado Diagonal Expedition

CO map of India's diagonal expedition line

I plan to tango around a diagonal line across this legendary state starting in the southeast corner in early May 2020 and ending if all goes well in the northwest corner in late August. I want to meet kindred spirits in nature, people, and the land as I hike roads, public land, and trails. I want to see Colorado as it is, along an arbitrary line, rather than pick places or have a trail tell me where to go. Also, the SE and NW corners of Colorado are the least explored and my most favorite parts of the state.

  • Corners: OK/KS/CO to UT/WY/CO
  • Towns with a store: Springfield to Maybell
  • River drainages: Cimarron River to Green River
  • Counties: Baca county, named after Felipe Baca, Hispanic pioneer and member of the Colorado territorial legislature in 1870; to Moffat county, named after David Moffat, a New Yorker who invested in Colorado railroads and banking
  • Geology: Holocene eolean deposits (less than a million years old) to Precambrian Red Creek quartzite (2.5 billion years old)

Squirrelodactyl, the official mascot of the Friends of India's Diagonal Expedition: Colorado

Check Facebook for updates on our adventures with squirrelodactyl, the official mascot of the Friends of India’s Diagonal Expedition (FIDE) Colorado.

Friends old and new are welcome to join me along the way. Love of nature and a good story required. Hikers must have a sense of whimsy, be dependable in tight situations, and  able to hike 15 miles a day with a 30-pound pack. Support crew must be handy with a GPS, have solid camping skills, and like India’s cooking.
