SUMMARY:Hiking the CO-X\, at the Sherbino in Ridgway
DESCRIPTION:Join India Wood for wild stories about backpacking her own route along a 1\,500-mile X across Colorado. Be inspired by one woman’s solo adventure and hear her observations of this state as a square sample of our planet.\nJoin India for a showing of the short “Diagonal” documentary\, slide show\, and stories about backpacking the Colorado X\, a walk no one else had ever done. She was a 50-something empty nester\, unfit\, her career and marriage falling apart when she decided to learn to stand on her own two feet again. The first NW diagonal pulled her toward her wild teen self who found a dinosaur near Maybell. The second SW diagonal proved her mettle in the San Juan Mountains\, a place of lost hikers and cannibals. Along the way she rediscovers her mom’s strength as she explores places like Silverton\, Rico\, and Dolores that her mother chronicled in the 1970s. Ranchers help India “go diagonal\,” offering friendship\, places to hike and camp\, and a deeper understanding of private vs. public lands and the sustainability of ranching. India’s journey challenges her with wrenching loneliness\, poison water\, Cascade Creek hypothermia\, and a Vail bear with a nose for chocolate.

SUMMARY:Winds of Change in Colorado's Trees\, Boulder MVUMC
DESCRIPTION:Join noted Colorado explorer and student of nature India Wood for a hands-on exploration of how to identify Colorado’s conifers and a slide show and stories about her hike along the 51-mile Gore Range Trail. The Gore Range north of Dillon reveals how our forests are changing due to cycles of insects\, maturity\, and weather and climate change. The ecological situation brings up a bigger spiritual and cultural question: what is the realm of the dead with the living? \nEvent is open to the public. Park and enter on the west side of the big A frame church and go to Frasier Parlor South.

SUMMARY:Hiking the CO-X\, Colorado Springs
DESCRIPTION:Join India Wood for a documentary film and wild stories about backpacking a 1\,500-mile X across Colorado. Be inspired by an older woman’s solo adventure and hear her observations of this state as a square sample of our planet.\nIndia backpacked from the SE to NW state corners in 2020 and the NE to SW corners in 2022. Her route included Sterling\, La Junta\, east Pueblo\, Chico Basin Ranch\, Fountain\, Colorado Springs\, Manitou\, and Florissant. Her talk includes photographs by her father\, Myron Wood\, of these places in the 1960s and 1970s. Myron’s archive is at the Pikes Peak Library. India was born and raised in Colorado Springs and attended North J.H.S. and Fountain Valley School. As a teen she found and dug up an allosaurus now on display at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. \nFeeling stuck in life in 2020\, she decided to learn to stand on her own two feet again by hiking. Farmers and ranchers offered help and friendship to this listening Boulderite as she sought places to hike\, camp\, and cache water. Her challenges included dead trails\, desperadoes\, a derecho\, heat waves\, high mountain passes\, and a Vail bear with a nose for chocolate.  \nShe was the first person to backpack the Colorado X\, in her 50s.

SUMMARY:The CO-X Hike: How I Did It\, WRV Longmont
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin India Wood and WRV friends for the “Diagonal” documentary and a 45-minute talk and Q&A about how she planned and backpacked her own mostly-solo 1\,500-mile route across Colorado. \n \nThis is not a Colorado Trail talk. India drew two diagonal lines from the SE to NW corners and NE to SW corners of CO and mapped routes as close as possible to the X without trespassing and despite inaccurate maps. She schmoozed private landowners and public agencies for permissions. Most of the route had no water so she often had to cache it. Then there were the challenges of physical fitness\, loneliness\, fear of “P. Rex”\, food resupplies\, segment transportation\, communications\, and hiking-buddy personalities. India will also tell stories about the Dungeons of Castle Peak and a Vail bear. \nIndia is in her 50s and an avid WRV volunteer and former board member. \n \n

SUMMARY:The Navigation of the CO-X Then and Now\, Denver
DESCRIPTION:Join India Wood at the Rocky Mountain Map Society for a comparison of the goals\, navigational methods\, maps\, and obstacles which shaped her own routes through Colorado and those of early explorers Zebulon Pike (1806)\, Stephen Long (1820)\, and John Fremont (1840s). \nWood’s hiking routes across Colorado\nWood\, a Colorado local\, chose her own route and hiked a 1\,480-mile X across Colorado in two diagonals: from the southeast to northwest corners in 2020 and northeast to southwest corners in 2022. This was a “first ascent” of the CO-X. Her love of maps began as a freshman in the Dartmouth College map room and deepened as a young dinosaur hunter and later amateur astronomer. After decades in business including an MBA from MIT she is now a speaker\, writer\, and photographer. \nTo participate in the talk via Zoom\, visit the RMMS meetings page.
